Frequently asked questions

What are your COVID-19 regulations?

Our building is screening every person that comes through our doors for fever and symptoms. Masks are required and socially distancing is strongly recommended. We are a small, local business and our foot traffic is not comparable to big box stores. We clean and disinfect after every visit.

What kind of jeweler is JVP Jewelers?

We are a full-service personal jeweler. That means we can offer anything from cleaning and polishing your jewelry, to replacing watch batteries, to designing custom pieces.

How often should I have my jewelry checked by a professional jeweler?

You should bring your jewelry to a professional jeweler approximately every six months. Everyday wear can cause your jewelry to lose luster and loosen stones.  We offer cleaning, polishing, and inspections for $12. Adding rhodium back onto your white gold jewelry costs an additional $20.

Where should I start on my diamond shopping?

You should familiarize yourself with the four C’s of diamonds: cut, clarity, color, and carat weight. We also recommend learning the difference between lab-grown and natural diamonds. This personal preference can make a big difference in price. Schedule an appointment with us and we'll help you pick out the perfect diamond or ring.

What building are you located in?

Our office is located in a professional building at 2150 W. 18th Street with the parking garage just off of Seamist. Visitors can park in unmarked spaces in the parking garage or find lot parking behind the parking garage building. Our office is #206.

Do I need an appointment?

Walk-ins are always welcome, but if you need a consult or appraisal, we recommend an appointment so we can answer all of your questions.

Can I clean my jewelry with toothpaste?

Absolutely NOT. Do not ever clean your jewelry with toothpaste. Toothpaste is very abrasive and can scratch your metal and stones.  Only use a mild soap and warm water to clean your jewelry between professional cleanings. A jewelry cleaning kit, which you can find at our store, is also a great item to own. Our cleaning kit includes a non-abrasive cleaning solution, a cleaning brush, and a polishing cloth for $18.

Why do I need current appraisals for my jewelry?

Metal prices fluctuate daily, and your jewelry's value may vary greatly since your last appraisal. Obtain a jewelry appraisal every two years to assure your jewelry's value is up to date.

I have homeowner's insurance. If I lose my jewelry, am I automatically covered?

You are not covered for loss or damage unless you have your jewelry appraised and scheduled separately. JVP Jewelers will properly document your jewelry piece-by-piece. We can also connect you with Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company, who insures our jewelry. As customers, we can faithfully recommend their service. We can send your appraisal to them for a free quote.

Are you certified to do an insurance appraisal?

JVP Jewelers has been certified by the Gemological Institute of America in Insurance Replacement Appraisals since 1998.

Do you sell class rings for my senior?

As a full-service jeweler, we are an authorized dealer for a wonderful class ring company.  We can provide rings for junior high, high school, and college, as well as career/corporate rings.

I want to make a big purchase. Do you offer financing?

We partner with Houston Highway Credit Union to offer financing. Applications are available at our store, and we can typically make approvals within an hour for financing as low as 6.24% APR.
